Big City Council Vote Coming Up This Month

We Need Your Letter of Support

The next step in the fight to save Saco Bay is a Letter of Support from the City of Saco to the Army Corps to initiate the Project Partnership Agreement (PPA), a legally binding agreement between the Government and the City of Saco acting as a non-Federal co-sponsor.

We are anticipating the City Council will vote on the Letter of Support at either its September 14 or 21 meeting. SOS Saco Bay enthusiastically supports this action. The Army Corps of Engineers has an appropriated budget of $26.9 million for the construction of a 750 foot breakwater adjacent to the existing jetty (Plan 6 as proposed in the Section 111 study). While this plan has been subject to some criticism, it is our only option. According to the Corps, it is this or nothing. There was overwhelming support for this plan when residents met at City Hall in 2018, but nothing materialized. If we don’t get this done now, we will almost certainly lose the funds.

The breakwater is the beginning of what we hope will be a larger solution to address erosion and shoreline damage throughout Saco Bay. As of now, 35 years have passed since homes started falling into the ocean and other than some band aids, nothing has been done. To do nothing is the ultimate form of negligence. We have put together a coalition of local, state, and federal officials that are working together so an agreement with the Army Corps can be reached. The time to take action is now.

Your Letter of Support is a crucial first step to ensure the City Council votes in our favor. We've done the hard part - all there is to do is click the button below, sign your name and address at the bottom, and hit "send." Signing with your name and address is important! Without it, your letter will not be entered into the record for speakers at the Council.
